It supports such reliable encryption protocols as DNS-over-HTTPS, DNS-over-TLS, and DNS-over-QUIC. What is AdGuard DNS? ĪdGuard DNS is one of the most privacy-oriented DNS services on the market. But, on the other hand, DNS blocking alone cannot provide cosmetic filtering. On the one hand, DNS has no blind spots since it observes all devices and not just the browsers. Using DNS for content blocking has some advantages as well as obvious flaws. To get a better protection, use DNS in combination with VPN and ad blocker. In this case, a browser-based ad blocker has proven insufficient. And where the Internet is, there are ads and trackers. Why use DNS for content blocking Ībsolutely everything is connected to the Internet these days, from TV to smart light bulbs, from mobile devices to smart auto. How do they work? When your device sends a "bad" request, be it an ad or a tracker, a DNS server prevents the connection by responding with a non-routable IP address for a blocked domain. There are also DNS servers that can block certain websites at DNS-level. This means that your ISP can track your online activity and sell logs to third parties. The default DNS server is usually provided by your ISP. And a regular DNS resolver simply returns the IP address of the requested domain. Each time you go to a website, your browser sends a DNS query to a DNS server to figure out the IP address of the website. I'll be using ControlD for the foreseeable future.DNS stands for "Domain Name System", and its purpose is to convert websites' names into IP addresses. They also don't hide behind a cloak like Adguard who is apparently based in Cyprus. But now my resolution times are about 3ms which is more than enough for me.Īnd Windscribe as a whole is extremely transparent as a company and what they do. Which used to resolve faster than ControlD's servers. Performance wise, since ControlDs last upgrade to their servers, it's been very much on par with Adguards servers. But that's really it and I know they're working on logging / analytics and I'm excited to see what they come up with. With that, I use Adguard for their stats and logging which is hands down better than ControlD. That's not to say it doesn't happen with controlD but it's way less of an issue and my wife is much happier when her stuff isn't blocked. I don't think they have the right approach to blocking things. Constantly with Adguard I'm white listing this white listing that. I'm a paying customer of ControlD since inception and hands down, their default home grown block list is phenomenal. Like I said, this is really a choice between two great options, so I'd love some feedback! Thanks in advance. It's unlimited (unlike AdGuard's solution) but I'm struggling to understand how to effectively use some of the functionality (there's a lot of options)! That being said, it did help us get to watch some futbol that was blocked in the USA without a VPN, which was great (we were able to access the site on the TV). I also really like the map of requests that AdGuard shows.ĬontrolD does have the autoconfiguration tool, but only with the native system DNS. ![]() I feel like AdGuard is a "simpler" interface and I find that I'm not having to sit and figure out what things do (it's also got the "autoconfiguration" for AdGuard users that sets up the DNS on all my devices that run AdGuard). Recognizing that this is the ControlD subreddit, I'd like to know why you'd choose ControlD for your DNS. Primarily, I'm basically using this to avoid additional trackers, block some unnecessary telemetry, and sometimes shut my kid's connection off when kid is being a brat □. I'm looking to choose one (I use WindScribe as my VPN and AdGuard on my devices) so this really is a choice between two great companies producing great products. ![]() I've been testing both AdGuard DNS and ControlD DNS and have been pleased with both. I've read the comparison on ControlD's site of the various private DNS providers, but I'd love some additional insight.
